I know it's hard to believe, but spring is right around the corner! Before we get too excited about warmer weather, however, we have a lot of excitement going on RIGHT NOW at Williams-Cone!

Congratulations go out to MORGAN ALLARD and LYNDSEY HANNAH for winning art entries in the 2011 Maine Recycles Calendar!!!
Kids Academy Talent Show set to begin the week of 2/14 instructed by music educator Susan Brown.
Kids Academy Children's Garden will begin the week of April 25th. This after school program will have the children taking part in expanding our garden.
SPIRIT WEEK! The week of February 14th...look to order carnations, wear crazy hair or crazy hats, show your school spirit by wearing red and white and participate in backwards day! Look for information in backpacks.
ROLLERWORLD NIGHT Thursday 2/24 during February Vacation

What can YOU do to help???

Grant a "teacher wish." These wishes are often as simple as reading in class for an hour. FMI email Holly Kopp or Lynn Sirois
Look up our school at Donors Choose to see if you can help a teacher with a request of an item. Mrs. Dunn and Mrs. San Pedro have both been successful with this site in getting items for their classrooms.

This is a fair you will NOT want to miss!

The children in grades 2-5 have been hard at work for the past 5 weeks creating art to sell at the fair. All of the money raised will support arts enrichment at Williams-Cone School. The 4th and 5th graders will be working at their table and selling all of the children's-made art.

There will be over 30 professional crafters, a bake/lunch sale, a 50/50 raffle...so much fun!

Please come out and support our school!

Fall is upon us! The air is crisp, the leaves on the trees are changing color and things are getting busy at Williams-Cone School!

Did you know that we have a Children's Garden at Williams-Cone? Last spring we planted carrots, tomatoes and flowers and just recently have been harvesting the "fruits of our labor." Check out the garden for yourself, it is located just to the left of the school entrance.

Summer brought lots of branches and fallen debris on the playground. A group of volunteers came in at the beginning of the school year and cleaned up the playground to make it safer and more pleasing to our children. A BIG thank you to them!

Even though things are turning "orange" outside, we are becoming more "green" at Williams-Cone. How?
1. 4 classrooms were painted with VOC-free paint earlier in the year.
2. We are encouraging email use (you can get the Principal's Newsletter via email!) to cut down on paper usage.
3. We are starting to recycle ink cartridges, cell phones, digital cameras and laptops. We'll keep you informed about our new recycling program as it unfolds.

We have also welcomed our new School Improvement Coordinator, Monique Barker. Monique will be working with the school to help us create healthy learning environments for our children.

URGENT: Public Hearing May 13th WE NEED YOU!

Our School Board is considering contracting out for custodial services. Possible questions to ask are

1)Will sub-contracted custodians have background checks?

2) Will sub-contracted custodians be ever changing in a school and therefore have less ownership in the cleanliness and safety of our schools?

3) If custodians are contracted out, will bus drivers and kitchen staff be next?

There is a public hearing at the May 13^th budget meeting to be held in Room 201 at the high school. This is an opportunity to voice your concerns. You may also choose to discuss the issue with school board members. Their names and contact information can be found on the district website.

Yardsale Fundraiser Saturday, May 15th

Public Budget Forum Meeting

Tuesday, April 6th at 6:30pm

Williams Cone School

The MSAD 75 School Board is trying to figure out what to do with our 2nd grade. We have too many students for our 2 existing classrooms. They are seriously considering moving to a multi-age classroom where the 2nd and 3rd graders will be lumped together.

This solution is not good for our school, our teachers and, most importantly, our students.

What we need is another teacher.

Please come to the public budget forum and help us, the parent body of our school, encourage the School Board to grant us money in our budget to hire an additional 2nd grade teacher.

This meeting will be your opportunity to hear what the School Board has in store for our school as well as give you the chance to ask questions of the Board.

Principal’s Report:

Mr. C provided information regarding the start of the school year and several new curriculum items and standards being implemented.
Wellness will be a general theme for the year. We will not have a school wide theme.
NWEA testing is currently taking place. NECAP testing to follow.
The flu shot clinic has been postponed without a specific future date.

Treasurer’s Report:

Current balance is $4,517.67
We are now making a profit on hats and t-shirts. Holly will look into getting additional fun items such as lanyards. Heather will investigate metal water bottles.

Old Business:

Thank you to all those who helped make the boohoo breakfast and ice cream social a success.

Pasta Dinner/Basket Raffle slated to be held on November 13th. Lori will contact Jocelyn Cooper-Stover in heading up the basket raffle effort. Volunteers will be needed to help with assembly.
Other Fundraising efforts will continue: boxtops, Hannaford coupons and Holly will investigate Hannaford bulk gift card program.
Library volunteers are needed to shelve books. Please pop in to the library if you have a few minutes

Important Dates and Volunteer Opportunities

The first week of the school year is behind us and it seems that everyone is enthusiastic about the beginning of the year. As always, we have a busy fall schedule and I wanted to get some important dates and announcements out so that everyone has an updated schedule.

1. First, thanks to Lisa Furgeson for her help with the back-to-school breakfast!

2. You should have received a notice home last Friday regarding the annual school open house and ice cream social being held from 5:30-7:00pm on Monday Sept 14th. Volunteers are need to serve ice cream, sell t-shirts and to go to the grocery store to purchase the ice cream. If you are interested please e-mail or call 729-4014. Thanks.

3. The first FOWC meeting will be held on Tues, Sept 22nd in the library at 7 pm. We will hold an open house for the first half of the meeting and then we will conduct a business meeting to conclude the evening. Our new principal Steve Ciembroniewicz will be present to report on topics such as new curriculum programs, RTI, and immunization clinics being held this fall. The open house portion of the evening will include brief overviews of the art fundraiser, basket raffle, kids academy, coin quest, and staff appreciation. The business meeting agenda will include a treasurer’s report, planning for bus driver appreciation being held Oct 5-8, art fundraiser details, discussion about the pasta dinner/basket raffle, website information, Hannaford fundraising, and interest in a community night. Please invite a friend and welcome new W-C members to our parent group on the 22nd. It will be the first opportunity for us to gather and talk with Steve Ciembroniewicz and to make plans for the fall! See you there!

4. Our librarian Trish Suthers is looking for help in the library. Feel free to pop in any time and shelve some books.

5. We are looking for one more volunteer for picture day, Friday Oct 2nd from 9-12 (free picture package included). Let me know if you are interested. Thanks!

6. Some staff indicated that a new entrance rug/carpet outside of the main door would be appreciated. I believe I can pick one up at Home Depot for a reasonable price. Any objections to making this improvement?

7. The Book Fair this fall will be held Oct 19-23, 2009. Mark your calendars!

8. FOWC meeting dates for this year are Tues, Sept 22, Tues Oct 27, Mon Nov 23, Tues Jan 26, Tues Feb 23, Tues March 30, Tues April 27, Tues May 25. All meetings are held in the school library at 7pm.

I wanted to provide you all with an update in preparation for the beginning of school in just one week! I met with our new Principal, Steve Ciembroniewicz, over the summer and I am excited about Steve’s enthusiasm and energy with regards to our school. I believe this will be a great year!

Some Important Dates to Remember:

MONDAY AUGUST 31st: Whether you are celebrating the beginning of the school year or sad to see you kiddos go back to school, please join us for coffee, juice, donuts, etc as students arrive in the morning at W-C. If you would like to help host (I will be there at 8:30), let me know or just show up. I plan to get coffee and donuts at Dunkin Donuts in the morning and will bring other goodies from home, but I am always happy to have help with running those errands, setting up, or just being a friendly face on the side walk so that we can welcome parents, new and seasoned, to our school.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 22nd, 7pm, library: We will hold our first Friends meeting which will consist of an open house style portion followed by a meeting to kick off the school year. It will be an opportunity for us to invite new parents to learn about the upcoming events of the school year as well as for many of us to meet our new Principal, Mr. C.

Fall Agenda Items and Events Include:
· The annual W-C open house and ice cream social (no date set yet)
· Bus driver appreciation week (October)
· Art Fundraiser
· Pasta Dinner/Basket Raffle
· Picture Day and Book Fair volunteers

Of course, Friends of W-C are always available to assist school community members in need!

A couple of topics I would love to see us explore are 1) an easy way to maintain and provide information on the Friends’ website, and 2) the addition of a community night similar to what Woodside did last August where several organizations from the community were invited to attend a school event. Perhaps we could invite others from the community to set up tables at either the ice cream social or pasta dinner?

These are just a couple of thoughts: I would love to hear your ideas and have your help in implementing them! While we have kept the agenda for the year consistent during a time of transition (with the arrival of a new principal and the on-going study of reconfiguration), all new ideas and participants are welcome. We can “jazz-up” any traditional event (as we did with making the coin drive a very popular “coin quest” last year)! So, think about what you and the Friends of W-C would like to accomplish this school year!

Principal’s Report:

Goodall landscaping will be hosting an Earth Day (April 22nd) spruce up program at the school. Volunteers will be needed. Suggested the Friends group provide lunch. Monique Barker is the liaison between the Friends group and Goodall.
Information and overview of public forum was given.

Treasurers Report:

Current balance of $9,059.44
Change drive brought in nearly $1,700 up from approximately $1,300 last year
$5,000 of planned upcoming expenses: performance theme supplies, field trips
$1,072 remains in playground fund account. Holly will check with Jodi, Lynn and Dawn before making a decision to roll this amount over to cover expenses as outlined above.

Old Business:

A new meeting is scheduled with Superintendent Wilhelm for April 14th at 7pm in the library.
Kids Academy is still doing well. Two new classes have started. A profit has been recognized of $385.36

New Business:

April bulletin board will focus on Spruce it up day / spring fling / Rollerworld
Holly will work with Monique to look at tying an Earth Day related project into school time or spring fling.
Heather is organizing the spring fling to take place May 2nd.
Sue Saucier has arranged the family fun night at Rollerworld. It is scheduled for Sunday, April 19th from 6-8pm. The cost will be $6.00 per person with ½ of proceeds going to WC.

Future Activity:

Spring Book fair – Trish Suthers will be needing volunteers for set up, take down and Wed. night sales Kathi Magno will be one volunteer
Representation at Kindergarten mini day and parent night / planning an open house Friends meeting

Principal’s Report:

School theme progressing. Most recent activity was the photographer coming into school and photographing students in the gymnasium. Photos will be narrowed to a total of 10 which will hang during the Art’s Festival.
MEAs will be given the first three weeks in March to grades 3-5. Beginning next year we will switch to NECAP testing which is given across New England and is a money saver. Students in grades 3-5 will take the NECAP in October.
There are many changes being considered for the 2009/2010 school year as a direct result of budgeting. The process is currently underway and it will be crucial for us to be represented at upcoming meetings and public hearings . www.link75.org/sad75new/pages/administration/district_office/board/budget.htm The two independent decisions to be made which we will need a voice in include:
Potentially closing one or both of the Harpswell elementary schools
Potentially reconfiguring Willams-Cone and Woodside elementary schools whereby one school would accommodate grades K-2 and the other grades 3-5. It is estimated that each school would have about 360 students. Bowdoin and Bowdoinham would also be reconfigured in a similar manner.
Mike Wilhelm is scheduled to attend the March Friends meeting. He will hopefully address and answer questions regarding the above items as well as the process being used to hire a new administrator.

Old Business:

Website still being revisited
Kids Academy doing well. $1,440 from program deposited, expenses not yet removed from account. Instructors will be compensated at $25/hr plus materials.

New Business:

March bulletin board will focus on Kids Academy and Change Drive
Change drive begins Monday, March 2nd with collection dates of March 6, 13 and 20th. Holly and Sue L. will work to revamp posters and collection jars, Heather to complete and implement an incentive plan, Kathi Magno will collect and take money to Atlantic Regional.
Ideas need to be brainstormed to connect the kids with the school theme
Sue S. will schedule a date with rollerworld for a family fun night fundraiser
A spring event will be organized – Heather?
A representative from Meadow Farms fundraising will be invited to the April Friends meeting to review product and procedures. A fundraiser potential for the Fall.

Principal’s Report:

Variety show preparations are currently underway.
On February 10 the 4th graders will take a national/state trend test
MEA testing will be given in March. This will be the last year for this particular test. Next year we will move to a new test the ‘NECAP’. This is a statewide cost cutting change. Testing will take place at the start of the year as opposed to the end. Grades being tested (3,4,5) will remain the same.
The artist program is progressing well and will lead into the spring arts festival. Special Chorus has participated in the process of composing and learned the school song. Photography will be displayed in the school for student viewing and input at the beginning of February.

Treasurer’s Report:

Current balance is $7,517
Outstanding needs include $3,000 for the artists (March need) and an additional $3,000 to go towards field trips.

Old Business:

Kids Academy has 3 classes running at this time comprised of 27 participants. This is not a money maker at this point but a great opportunity for the kids.
The Friends of Williams Cone website (www.friendsofwilliamscone.com) redesign is still being discussed. Currently the district is reworking their web design which may offer an avenue for us to explore. Jenn and Heather will spearhead this project and form a committee.

New Business:

Otis Thompson will be retiring at the conclusion of this school year. The rehiring of his position and current budget issues were discussed. Holly will work to see if a meeting with the school board and Mike Wilhelm is possible to understand the process and impacts as well as to ensure our voices are heard.
Jackie Alley, a bus driver for WC, is in need of support after losing her house to a fire. Donations can be given to Karen in the office. It has been suggested that we donate dessert items to a benefit dinner being organized. Holly will learn of the details and specific needs.
The February change drive which supports the performances program will move to March under the theme of ‘March Madness’. We need to spruce up the flair for this program and connect with the kids. Sue and Heather will work on new posters, flyers, bulletin board and incentive calendar. Weigh ins will take place on March 6, 13 and 20. Kathi and Holly will be responsible for weigh ins, collections and deposits.

Treasurer’s Report:

Old Business:

Art Fundraiser items are in process and will arrive to school for distribution no later than December 18. This fundraiser brought in $1,100. Kathi Magno and Michelle Mathieu will distribute when available.
The pasta dinner / raffle night was successful. Thank you to all of the volunteers. We recognized earnings of $2,296. Feedback was positive.
Landscaping will take place around the school grounds in Spring and Fall. Monique Barker is coordinating with her husband and landscaping company. Activity may include a theme garden in tangent with Dana Greenleaf’s class.

New Business:

The Friends will sponsor a family in need from Williams Cone for the holiday season in coordination with Amy Wallace. Michelle Mathieu will distribute needs and coordinate.
The current Friends website (www.friendsofwilliamscone.com ) needs to be revamped. Jenn Dwinal will investigate options and form a subcommittee to work on this task.
Holly is exploring the idea of implementing an after school program (Williams-Cone Kids Academy) which would provide students with an opportunity to take a class of interest. The program would be held in January and February from 3:30-4:30. Classes would run for 4-6 weeks. Details to follow.

Art Fundraiser is set to go. Sue Saucier is coordinating. Artwork and order forms will be sent home Oct. 27 and return to school by Nov. 3rd. WC is also coordinating with Pejepscot Day School and Sweetpeas.
Pasta Dinner/Basket Raffle Tricia Bursey is working on pricing of a ziti dinner. Holly and Sue will assist with coordinating the dinner. Jocelyn Cooper-Stover will head up the basket raffle effort. Jodi Galvin and Lynn Sirois will assist with assembly. Sue Lawrence will organize the Williams-Cone spirit packages to increase winning number of tickets. Lisa Furgeson will sell WC items the night of the dinner.
Fundraising will be explored. Lisa Furgeson will put together a flyer outlining the boxtops, Hannford coupon and milk cap programs. Anyone willing to investigate a gift wrap program such as Sally Foster that can be run on-line please contact Holly at hollykopp@suscom-maine.net
Bookfair will take place the week of Oct. 20th. Volunteers are needed to run the bookfair for the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 22nd from 5-7 If you can lend a hand please let Holly know.
